On May 5, 2024, at 9:20 am IST, the world of ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness) experienced a profound loss as His Holiness Gopal Krishna Goswami Maharaja departed from this world. He was among the senior most disciples of His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, the founder of ISKCON, and served as a dedicated GBC Chairman.
Maharaja’s contributions to ISKCON were immense, and his departure marks the end of an era. He played a critical role in leading and managing the organization, with a focus on spreading the teachings of Srila Prabhupada across the globe. His commitment to building temples and managing ISKCON’s operations has left an indelible mark.
A significant part of Maharaja’s legacy is his work with Bhaktivedanta Gurukula and International School (BGIS), where he served as the GBC. He was instrumental in establishing the new campus at Ajhai, Mathura, a project that held a special place in his heart. His efforts and vision were key to creating an environment where spiritual education could thrive. Additionally, Maharaja was deeply involved in the development of the Dehradun temple, which was the last temple for which he performed the Bhumi Pujan ceremony.
Throughout his life, Maharaja adhered to the two key instructions given to him by his spiritual master, Srila Prabhupada: build the temple and manage ISKCON. He was in Dehradun to fulfill these responsibilities, demonstrating his unwavering dedication to his spiritual master’s mission.
On May 6, 2024, from 3:00 PM to 3:30 PM IST, the ISKCON community will gather at ISKCON Goshala, Vrindavan, for Maharaja’s Samadhi ceremony. This will be a time of reflection, gratitude, and reverence for a leader whose life was devoted to serving Krishna and spreading the teachings of Bhakti.
As we say goodbye to His Holiness Gopal Krishna Goswami Maharaja, we remember his unwavering commitment, leadership, and compassion. His legacy will continue to inspire and guide devotees around the world for generations to come. Hare Krishna.
